What is a birthday magazine?
Short answer: A birthday magazine is a personalized, magazine-style booklet made about one person for their birthday. They’re the cover star, and every page is about them: a letter, a timeline of their life, reasons they’re loved, a fun interview, photos, a quiz and wishes from friends. It’s printed as a keepsake or sent as a PDF.
Homemade birthday magazines became one of the big DIY gift trends of 2026. Here’s what they are, what goes inside, who makes them, whether to print or send one, and how long it really takes.

What goes inside a birthday magazine
A birthday magazine borrows the format of a real magazine — cover, editor’s letter, features, interview, photo spread — and fills every page with one person. A classic eight-page issue looks like this:
| Page | What’s on it |
|---|---|
| 1. Cover | Their photo, their name as the magazine title (the masthead), their age and three to five headlines called cover lines |
| 2. Letter from the editor | Your birthday message to them, signed by you |
| 3. The story so far | A timeline of their milestones, with years |
| 4. Reasons we love you | A numbered list, from heartfelt to hilarious |
| 5. The interview | Their answers to playful questions |
| 6. Photo gallery | Favorite photos with short captions |
| 7. The quiz | “How well do you know them?” with an answer key |
| 8. Back cover | Birthday wishes from friends and family |
Short on time? A four-page issue keeps the cover, the reasons, the gallery and the wishes. For dozens more page ideas — horoscopes, coupons, “most likely to” awards — see our birthday magazine ideas, plus ready-made interview questions and quiz questions.
Why birthday magazines went viral
Homemade birthday newspapers and magazines aren’t new, but between 2025 and 2026 searches for birthday magazine templates grew more than tenfold. A few reasons the idea caught on:
- The reveal is the moment. Seeing yourself on a magazine cover, with your name as the title and your inside jokes as headlines, gets a real reaction — and reactions get shared.
- It looks expensive but isn’t. It’s made from photos already on your phone, an evening of writing and a couple of sheets of paper.
- The fashion-magazine look photographs well. A huge serif title, a full-width portrait and bold cover lines are recognizable in any photo or short video. Our Glam style is built on that look.
- Templates made it easy. Ready-made layouts mean you only add words and photos, so people who have never designed anything can finish one.
- It fits every age and relationship. A first-birthday keepsake, a sweet 16, a best friend’s 21st, a 50th for Mom — the format stretches to all of them.
- It’s a keepsake, not a scroll. Messages in a chat disappear. A printed magazine sits on a shelf, gets reread, and its cover often ends up framed.
Who makes them, and who they’re for
Anyone who knows the birthday person well enough to fill a few pages. The most common makers:
- Partners — for a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife: your story together, inside jokes and a page of reasons.
- Best friends and friend groups — everyone sends a wish or a memory, and one person puts the magazine together.
- Grown-up children — for a parent’s 50th, 60th, 70th or 80th, with old family photos and wishes from the grandchildren.
- Parents — a first-birthday magazine is a keepsake of year one, and for older kids it can become a yearly tradition.
- Siblings, coworkers and classmates — a team or class can each write a wish or a quiz question.
- Kids themselves — a mini magazine folded from one sheet of paper makes a perfect handmade card for a friend.
You can also pay for one: online sellers and local print shops design custom birthday magazines for a fee. Making it yourself costs less and is more personal, because nobody knows the stories the way you do.
Digital or printed?
Both work. The right format mostly depends on whether you’ll be there when they open it.
| Format | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Printed booklet | Handing over in person — it feels like a real magazine | Printed double-sided, then folded and stapled: see how to fold a booklet |
| Printed full pages | Framing the cover or laying the pages out at a party | Easy to print single-sided; bind it with staples, ribbon or tape |
| Digital PDF | Long-distance birthdays and last-minute gifts | Send it by message or email; it’s less of a keepsake than paper |
How long does it take to make one?
Less than you might think, if you start from a template — most of the work is choosing photos and deciding what to say. A realistic guide:
| Task | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Gathering photos | 30–60 minutes (longer if old prints need photographing) |
| Collecting wishes from friends | Ask a week ahead; only a few minutes of your own time |
| Writing the letter, reasons and interview | 1–2 hours |
| Filling in a guided template | 30–60 minutes |
| Designing every page yourself in a design app | Several hours on top of the writing |
| Printing, folding and stapling | 15–30 minutes |
With a template, that’s an evening or two of hands-on work, spread over a week while the wishes come in. Our step-by-step guide has a one-week plan. Prefer to design it yourself? See how to make one in a design app.
