Photo tips for the Gold cover
- Choose a calm portrait. A photo taller than it is wide, with their face in the top half and a plain or softly blurred background, looks best inside the gold frame.
- Leave room for the medal. The round age medal overlaps the bottom-right corner of the photo, so keep faces and hands away from that spot.
- Go warm or go black-and-white. Golden-hour light and warm indoor photos glow against the navy, and a black-and-white portrait looks instantly classic.
- Bring old prints back. For a then-and-now gallery, photograph old prints flat in daylight, without flash. Use original photo files where you can — screenshots and photos saved from chats can print soft.
Gold ideas by milestone
| Birthday | Cover line idea | Page idea |
|---|---|---|
| 40th | “Forty and still the coolest person we know” | Interview: “What would you tell your 20-year-old self?” |
| 50th | “Half a century of being wonderful” | Timeline: one milestone for each decade, then the big 5-0 |
| 60th | “Sixty years young: the collector’s edition” | Gallery: then-and-now photos side by side |
| 70th | “Seventy years of stories — the best ones inside” | Quiz: their hometown, first car and first job |
| 80th | “Eighty remarkable years, one remarkable person” | Wishes: one message from each generation of the family |
The masthead doesn’t have to be their first name: a family nickname such as “Nana” or “Papa” looks lovely in the gold serif. Want a head start? These templates open in Gold, with page titles, questions and cover-line ideas written for the occasion:
- 50th birthday magazine — five decades on the timeline and golden wishes from everyone
- 60th birthday magazine — sixty years of stories, with questions written for a 60th
- 80th birthday magazine — eight decades of memories and wishes from every generation
- Birthday magazine for husband — your story together and the reasons you love him
- Birthday magazine for dad — family milestones, his best dad jokes and wishes from the kids
Printing a navy-and-gold issue
The navy cover and back cover use more ink than the cream inside pages. Print one test cover first, choose the “standard” or “high” quality setting and let dark pages dry for a minute before stacking. Our printing guide covers paper, settings and folding the booklet.

Frequently asked questions
Which birthdays suit the Gold template?
Gold was designed for milestones — 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th and beyond — and for anyone who prefers classic to colorful. The 50th, 60th and 80th birthday templates open in Gold, with ideas written for each age.
Can I make a Gold magazine for a woman?
Can I hide the age or change the words under it?
Yes. Leave the age empty and the medal disappears from the cover. Or keep it and change the small words under the number — “Years young” by default — to something like “Years of wisdom” or “Golden years”.
Is the gold printed as metallic foil?
No. The gold is printed as a warm golden color, so it works on any home printer. For extra shine, print the cover on glossy or satin photo paper — see how to print a birthday magazine.
Is the Gold template free?
Yes. Fill in every page and preview it without an account, then sign in with Google to download the print-ready PDF for free. Print it at home or at a copy shop — Oolshak doesn’t print or ship.
